Safe Roads and Users

A program to reduce road injuries and deaths, and increase road knowledge.

Road safety remains a pressing issue in NSW, with many drivers and riders impacted by reckless behaviours, inadequate road education, defective vehicles, and fluctuating road conditions. Among the top concerns are potholes, hazardous objects, defective vehicles such as speedometers, overweight trucks, and a general lack of road knowledge. Identifying these challenges allows us to focus on a holistic solution that addresses the root causes of road incidents. Enter the innovative web app designed to empower road users, providing tools to report hazards and educational materials to enhance road safety awareness. This innovative solution aims to enhance road safety by leveraging technology to connect all stakeholders, including individual drivers, government agencies, and educational institutions.

Key Issues on NSW Roads

  1. Potholes and Dangerous Objects: Frequent encounters with potholes and hazardous objects such as nails and metal fragments pose significant risks, often leading to vehicle damage, accidents and, in worst-case scenarios, severe injuries.
  2. Defective Vehicles: Many vehicles on NSW roads have defects, such as malfunctioning speedometers, which can compromise driver safety and their ability to operate safely, leading to potential road mishaps.
  3. Overweight Trucks: Trucks that exceed weight limits are another factor that endangers road safety. Overweight trucks can damage road infrastructure, leading to potholes and other hazards. Additionally, they are more challenging to control, increasing the risk of accidents
  4. Lack of Road Knowledge: A considerable number of drivers, particularly young and new drivers, lack adequate knowledge about road laws and safe driving practices. This gap in education leads to uninformed driving decisions, which can result in traffic violations and accidents.

To mitigate these issues we have developed The Safe Roads web application, which offers a multifaceted approach to enhancing road safety through education, reporting, and technological innovations. Below are the key features of the application:

  1. Reporting Potholes: Our app allows users to report potholes and dangerous objects to local councils seamlessly. By utilising the ‘point to shoot’ feature, drivers can capture images of road hazards, which are then geo-tagged with coordinates. These reports are sent directly to local authorities for timely action, ensuring road conditions are addressed promptly.
  1. Speed Calculation Education: The app offers education on calculating speeds using the same equations employed by traffic authorities. This knowledge is crucial for helping drivers stay within speed limits and preventing speeding tickets.
  1. Truck Colouring System for Load Management: Overloaded trucks pose significant safety threats and contribute to road degradation. The app introduces a truck colouring system, which is a visual approach to managing truck loads. Trucks are assigned specific colours that correspond to their load limits. These colours are prominently displayed on signs and light poles instead of traditional height limits. This innovative system simplifies the identification of compliant and non-compliant trucks, enabling quicker and more effective enforcement.
  2. Legal Road Educational Material: The app provides legal road educational material targeting young and new drivers and those at risk. These resources include interactive lessons on road laws, safe driving practices, and real-world scenarios. This material will be disseminated in schools and through partnerships with institutions like YMCA.

Collaboration with Stakeholders

We’re bringing onboard government agencies like Transport for NSW, NSW Police, local councils, and educational bodies. This collaboration is key to implementing a system that’s robust and beneficial to the community.

A Bright Road Ahead

The ultimate goal is to foster a safer driving environment in NSW, reducing road incidents and ensuring smoother, safer travel experiences for all. By leveraging technology and education, this web app is set to revolutionize the way we approach road safety.

The NSW Heavy Vehicle Access Policy (HVAP) was originally released in 2018 to provide a strategic approach to heavy vehicle access in NSW, enabling safer, more productive and sustainable movement of heavy vehicles on the road network, for the benefit of the people of NSW.
